Home Race Pins for Grins History Sponsors
Old Time Newsies was formed in 1935 by Dayton attorney Albert Scharrer. At that time, the organization’s primary purpose was to provide food baskets for the less fortunate. Food baskets were purchased with funds raised by selling a special edition newspaper that the Dayton Daily News provided to the organization at no cost. The organization’s name and logo harkens back to the many newsboys who would sell the papers on street corners.
In the 1940s, Old Time Newsies raised additional funds by sponsoring Golden Gloves boxing events. In the 1950s, the organization started a scholarship fund for former news boys.
In the 1960s, Old Time Newsies developed a close relationship with and began supporting Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Miami Valley. Even today, these organizations work side-by-side coordinating fundraising events to benefit the Miami Valley.
In 1970, fund raising efforts shifted from selling newspapers to organizing an American Motorcycle Association (AMA) race in partnership with the Dayton Area Motorcycle Dealers. Held every year on the first Saturday in June, this event continues even today.
In 1997, Old Time Newsies partnered with KK Motorcycle to organize its first annual Pins & Grins Bowling event. At this annual pledge drive, teams compete for door prizes and bragging rights while raising money for local charities.
In 1999, Old Time Newsies expanded its motorcycle event to include a block party on the preceding Friday. Live music, a cruise-in and a custom bike show create a festival-like atmosphere at this great event.
